RESERVE THE DESERVE

For decades now, the reserved and the deserved conflict has been a highly volatile issue.  The reservation law created then to uplift society's backward and marginalised sections was revolutionary and the need of the hour.

Discrimination and stratification of society was the outcome of human mentality and understanding. Humanity took a back foot, and the caste came into being and to the extent that the last name became much prevalent in the society. Occupation became the basics of discretion of the humans into superiors and inferiors. These so-called superiors assumed themselves to be the lords. They began labelling the inferiors or lower castes, which led them to a constant struggle for their identity and establishment in society.

Undoubtedly, their years of struggle and the law of reservation gave them their identity legally in the societal norms. However, the fight against the mental stigma is still on, perhaps because today, a decent majority of the reserved categories are living and earning well but still availing the benefits of reservation.

The purpose of reservation has faded in the present scenario. Today, the reserved seats from education to jobs, to sports and politics are keeping the deserved bereft of the progress and hindering the progress of the nation.

The upliftment of every individual in society is a must, and policymakers should seriously look into it. But, they must also understand that one should get what s/he deserves irrespective of the caste, creed and community he belongs to.

It is important to ponder that ability and potential are innate and has nothing to do with caste, creed, or community. Therefore, let the deserved be reserved; else, we shall be deprived of good doctors, engineers, scientists and politicians.

Can't we shift the fundamentals of reservation from castes to capability? Can't reservations be allocated on the financial status?

Perhaps it would not only end the mental stigma of the society against marginalised categories but also halt the brain drain from India.
